## About Language Layouts

Language Layouts makes Notion templates and offers coaching for two audiences: language learners who
want a system for true mastery, and language teachers who want to plan and deliver results. Everything
is organised around Paul Nation's Four Strands — a research-backed way to balance how you spend
learning (or teaching) time. The maker is Damien Herlihy, a TESOL-trained language teacher who also
co-founded the school TEC in Trat, Thailand, and writes at damienherlihy.com.

Design language draws on warm, paper-like neutrals; each of the Four Strands has its own colour for
tagging and visual coding.

## The Four Strands
- Meaning-Focused Input (MFI) — learning through listening and reading you can mostly understand;
  comprehensible input and extensive reading.
- Meaning-Focused Output (MFO) — learning through speaking and writing real ideas; pushed output and
  task repetition.
- Language-Focused Learning (LFL) — deliberate study of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling.
- Fluency Development (FD) — becoming fluent with known material; speed, ease, 4/3/2, repeated reading.
- Balance: aim for roughly 25% of time in each strand.
